'A bunch of
noise' to one, boring to another, ignored by the rest

July 25, 2008, German Village, Ohio--According
to most of the people I've talked to, Barack Obama's Berlin speech wasn't
as great as all the pundits and reporters are saying it was.

I'd been dozing during the John McCain speech
here at Schmidt's Sausage Haus und Restaurant when I heard a faint, tinny
sound below the drone of Candidate McCain's voice. I opened my eyes
and saw the other reporter covering the event listening to something on
his headphones.
"What're you listening to?" I asked.

"Obama's speech," he said.
"How's he doing?"
"It's hard to tell with all the cheering.
Sounds like a bunch of noise. How's McCain doing?"
"The usual," I said.
When McCain's speech ended, I yawned, looked
around, and saw a small crowd gathered round a television tuned to the
Obama speech. I pushed past the stretching and yawning people who'd
endured McCain's speech and joined the crowd watching the Obama speech.
"How's he doing?" I asked.
"Shhh!"

I went outside, stretched and yawned, and
then walked to my hotel. On the way, I asked several people if
they'd heard the Obama speech, but only one, a guy named Ace, had.
Ace told me he thought it "sucked" and was "boring." When I got to
my room, I watched MSNBC's Chris Matthews gush worshipfully about
Candidate Obama's speech for as long as I could stand it before I turned
off the television and went to bed.
Developing story. . . .
